Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli; Sahbaye Hajj: The Day of Arafa

The Glory of Arafa

The day of Arafa is a day of supplication and lamentation!

We have a knowledge, a worship, and a lamentation! The lamentation is not that we perform the prayers or recite supplications, of course, we earn the reward of them; but now, if - God forbid - someone is told that ‘you have a malignant tumor’, how does he supplicate? He does not say: "اللهم اشفني (O Allah, cure me)," but he cries out! Supplication is that in which there is both knowledge and action. This lamentation of Khwaja Abdullah Ansari, that "خدايا مرا دارا کن نه دانا (O God, make me wealthy [of the knowledge], not [just] learned)," is exactly this; the day of Arafat is the day for such a work! In this luminous supplication of Imam Sajjad, which he recited on the day of Arafa, the same expression that is used regarding the blessed month of Ramadan has been mentioned; what do we say in the blessed month of Ramadan? We say:

"هَذَا شَهْرٌ عَظَّمْتَهُ وَ كَرَّمْتَهُ وَ شَرَّفْتَهُ  وَ فَضَّلْتَهُ عَلَی الشُّهُور"

(This is a month that You have magnified and honored and exalted and preferred over [other] months)," in the luminous supplication of Imam Sajjad on the day of Arafa, he also states that "شَرَّفْتَهُ وَ كَرَّمْتَهُ (You have exalted and honored it [the day of Arafa])!" This day is like the blessed month of Ramadan, a time of supplication.
